How easy is it to repeat someone else’s experiments? In a 2016 Nature survey (Baker, 2016), more than 70% of respondents indicated that they have tried and failed to reproduce another scientist's experiments. We spend hours on the bench, sometime even weekends, using expensive reagents to get an experiment right by extensive trial and error. Indeed, this is the norm of everyday research life. Can we change the way we do research? Dr. Fanglian He, the Executive Editor of Bio-protocol , will explain Bio-protocol’s mission to tackle this problem. Founded in 2011 by Stanford researchers, Bio-protocol is a free access, peer-reviewed e-journal that specializes in curating high quality life science protocols. It has partnered with 13 high-profile journals including Science , eLife to improve the reproducibility of a published work. In this talk, Dr. He will discuss with you what are the keys to write a reproducible lab protocol, and how to request detailed protocols directly from the methods section of a research article.
