Abstract:
Continuous bidirectional communication between the brain and peripheral organs is essential for maintaining homeostasis. Sensory neurons convey information about visceral states to the brain, which integrates these signals and sends top-down commands through the autonomic nervous system to regulate organ function and behavior. Despite its importance, the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying gut–brain communication remain unclear. This research focuses on the nervous system associated with the gut and aims to define its cellular composition, circuit organization, and neurophysiological properties. Our work will reveal how specific neural pathways coordinate gut physiology and, in turn, influence animal behavior and emotional states.
