Pushing the limit of MRI: from macro- to meso- and micro-structures with diffusion MRI

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive neuroimaging tool that provides rich contrasts for imaging the brain structure and function, but is known to be limited in its spatial resolution. Diffusion MRI has the potential to probe the tissue microstructural information within an imaging voxel according to the restricted water diffusion shaped by the local environment. In this talk, Dr. Wu will start with the basic principles of diffusion MRI and its recent progress. She will then introduce the development of 3D high-resolution and fast diffusion MRI pulse sequences at her lab, which achieved an ultra-high resolution at mesoscale (sub-millimeter or even microns). To reach beyond the limit of physical resolution, Dr. Wu devoted herself on diffusion MRI-based microstructural imaging technique. Particularly, she developed the diffusion-time-dependent diffusion MRI method and established biophysical models to reconstruct tissue microstructural information, such as cell size, intracellular fraction and permeability. Lastly, she will discuss how these new imaging tools can be used for neuroscience research and clinical applications.
